How Do Braces Work?
Braces today are more customizable than ever, and we're here to help you find the right treatment to correct your bite and fit your lifestyle. Let's talk about the different kinds of braces available and how they work!
How Braces Work
Each component of your braces treatment (wires, bands, and brackets) works to give you a straighter, healthier smile!
Brackets are the little square attachments that are placed on each tooth. The thin wire that runs through the brackets and determines the direction of movement is called an archwire. Small rubber bands hold these wires in the bracket but additional elastics may be needed to give you the best results. These rubber bands hook to connect your upper and lower teeth to correct bite problems.
Braces are designed to shift your teeth safely by slowly moving the bone . We want our patients to achieve the best results safely and effectively, which is why treatment takes a while!
Different Types of Braces
Metal braces are durable and precise, which is why they remain a steady constant in the orthodontic world. Some of our braces even hold the ortho wires discreetly for comfortable treatment!
Ceramic braces use tooth - colored brackets that blend in with your teeth for a lower profile, which many teens and adults appreciate. Some braces can even be placed on the back of the teeth for a more discreet treatment option!
Clear aligners like Invisalign can be easily removed for patients with busy lifestyles.
When Does Braces Treatment Start?
The timeline for your orthodontic treatment, whether Invisalign or braces, depends on a few things. Clinically, once we complete your exam, records, and plan, and your teeth and gums are healthy, we can schedule placement, often within days to a couple of weeks based on appointment availability.
If you choose clear aligners, there is an extra step while the lab fabricates your trays after we scan your teeth. Production and shipping can take several weeks in some cases, but we will give you an estimated arrival date for your trays at your appointment. Our team at Crossley Orthodontics tries to keep this transition period into treatment smooth by scheduling your start date as soon as you are cleared and your trays arrive!
Regardless of what treatment you choose, the goal is a healthy bite and a confident smile!
